Fun with Google Trends

Recently at the Google Blog, they posted about a new feature on the Google Trends site. The feature shows recent “hot trend” searches at any given time (filtering out searches for adult content and MySpace). I hadn’t been to Google Trends in a while and forgot how much fun it could be. Google Trends gives you the ability to compare anything and if phrased correctly can give statistical backing to any argument in the form of a graph.

A few of my favorite examples:

Good vs Evil

With Trends, its easy to distinguish who the “winner” is here, (at least in terms of searches and news references). Good wins the popularity contest by a landslide.

Big 3 Showdown

Results here are surprising, with Yahoo being ahead of Google by a small margin over time. Also note the slow movement of Microsoft’s ranking. The results are ultimately meaningless due to the dozens of outside factors you can probably come up with immediately, but the graph and results are interesting all the same.
